Privacy Policy

Effective date: December 28, 2025

Who we are

Chicago Fog is published by Burgett Capital Partners, LLP (“we,” “us,” “Chicago Fog”). This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and share information when you visit chicagofog.com (the “Site”) and when you interact with Chicago Fog through third-party platforms we use (for example, Substack, WordPress/Jetpack, and Google Analytics).

Scope and third-party platforms

  • chicagofog.com is a WordPress site and may use Jetpack services provided by Automattic. Jetpack+2Automattic+2
  • Chicago Fog is also published on Substack at chicagofog.substack.com. Substack provides the publishing, subscription, and (if applicable) paid subscription infrastructure and processes personal information under its own Privacy Policy. Substack also states that publishers are responsible for complying with applicable privacy laws for their subscriber relationships. Substack+1

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected by chicagofog.com and to information we receive through platforms we use (for example, subscriber lists we can access as the publisher). For information collected directly by Substack or Automattic/Jetpack, their policies also apply. Substack+2Automattic+2

Information we collect

A. Information you provide voluntarily

  • Email address and subscription details (for example, if you subscribe, comment, or contact us). If you subscribe via Substack, Substack collects and processes the subscription information and shares certain information with us as the publisher. Substack+1
  • Comments or messages you submit, including any information you choose to include.

We do not request or intend to collect sensitive personal information (for example, government identifiers, health information). Please do not submit it.

B. Information collected automatically (analytics and logs)

Like most websites, we and our service providers may collect information automatically, such as:

  • IP address (or partial IP), device/browser information, referring pages, pages viewed, and approximate location derived from IP.
  • Site usage metrics (visits, session duration, popular pages).

Jetpack Stats: Jetpack Stats logs may include visitor IP addresses and WordPress.com usernames (if available). Automattic states Stats logs are retained for 28 days and used only to power the feature. Jetpack+1

Google Analytics (GA4): We may use Google Analytics to understand Site usage. Google explains that (i) Google Analytics acts as a data processor under certain privacy regimes, and (ii) GA4 includes EU-focused controls and “does not log or store IP addresses” when using EU domains/servers. Google Help+1

C. Cookies and similar technologies

We and our providers may use cookies or similar technologies to operate the Site, remember preferences, and produce analytics. GA4 commonly uses cookies to distinguish users/sessions and measure engagement. CookieScript+1

How we use information

  • Respond to inquiries and administer subscriptions;
  • Send updates (if you opted in);
  • Monitor performance, prevent fraud/abuse, and maintain security;
  • Comply with legal obligations.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only as needed for the Site and publication to operate, including:

  • Service providers (for example, hosting, analytics, email/subscription tools).
  • Platform providers (for example, Substack; Automattic/Jetpack) where your interaction necessarily involves their systems. Substack+2Automattic+2
  • Legal/process: if required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, and security.

We may share aggregated or de-identified analytics (information that does not reasonably identify you) for site improvement and promotion.

Data retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes above (for example, to manage subscriptions and communications), unless a longer retention period is required by law. Jetpack’s published Stats-log retention is 28 days. Jetpack+1
